The flow of the conventional activated sludge process and MBR are shown below. Unlike the conventional treatment, which employs a sedimentation tank, in MBR, sludge is separated with the membrane. The MBR process has the following advantages:
• Small Footprint : In the case of MBR, the biological treatment can be operated with higher concentration of MLSS, between 7,000 m/L and 18,000. As a result, the biological reaction is carried out more efficiently compared to the conventional process, the capacity of the activate sludge tank can be reduced. In addition, the sedimentation tank is not necessary in MBR, the footprint is much smaller.

• High quality of treated water: Since the suspended sludge can be removed with the membrane in MBR, the water quality of treated water is very much better than the conventional method. In MBR, you can also expect that microorganisms such as Escherichia coli and Cryptosporidium are rejected
