We will start water treatment methods based on water source : the beginning will be steps involved in treating surface water from rivers, lakes to make it suitable for drinking as per WHO standards :
Screening – as said is part of the intake.
Surface water treatment is the most forward and simplest it involves the following :
Coagulation – Chemicals are added to cause suspended particles to clump together into larger particles called floc.
Flocculation – Gentle mixing causes the floc to grow in size and weight so it will settle out of the water.
Sedimentation – The heavy floc settles out in sedimentation in conventional sedimentation or lamella tanks.
Filtration – The water then passes through filters to remove smaller suspended particles and pathogens.
Disinfection – Chemical disinfectants like chlorine, chloramine or ozone are applied.
Storage – The treated clean water is kept in enclosed storage tanks ready for distribution.
We will start by detailing coagulation, flocculation which could be involved in other water sources treatment.
